Mahindra Ssangyong Rexton

Founded in 1954 and owned by Daewoo until 2010, Ssangyong is a one of the leading auto manufacturers in Korea. After its acquisition by the Indian auto giant Mahindra & Mahindra in 2010, the Indo-Koreans launched a luxury segment Sports Utility Vehicle in Auto expo 2012 and tagged it as Mahindra Ssangyong Rexton. M&M already has XUV 500 under it which sold like hot cakes in 2011. But they claim that this 7-seater SUV will be altogether a difference experience. The SUV is competing with only one Indian competitor, Tata Safari Storme at this stage and may likely get competition from other SUVs like Renault Koleos, Honda CR-V and Hyundai Santa fe. By far, Mahindra Ssangyong Rexton is the most expensive product by M&M ranging between 18.4-20.6 lakhs.

Exterior

M&M have not left a single stone unturned while designing the exterior of Mahindra Ssangyong Rexton. The overall structure of the car renders an aerodynamic and sleek shape. From the front, the long sloping bonnet with 4 ridges, bold front grille in the form of three horizontally placed chrome plates endorsing the Ssangyong logo, aggressive hawk eye shaped headlamp cluster, body shaped front bumper with integrated long and sleek horizontally placed fog lamps on either sides with turn indicators, large centrally located hexagonal meshed air dam, carbon colored skid plate and the prominent windshield with panoramic sunroof, all add up to the get up of the car.

  

From the side, Mahindra Ssangyong Rexton gets a long, sturdy and an aggressive look with features like body colored door handles and outside rear view mirrors (ORVMs) with arrow shaped turn indicators, bold wheel fenders, 16 inch alloy wheels with tubeless radial tires, silver colored roof rails, shark fin antenna on the rear portion of the roof and stainless steel side steps between the front and rear wheels. At the rear the SUV is adorned with rear spoiler with high mount stop lamp, huge wraparound windscreen integrated with rear washer and wiper with defogger, large tail lamp cluster with reversed ‘L’ shaped parking lights, rear bumper posing the rear reflectors and the word ‘REXTON’ engraved on it and chrome finished rear exhaust pipes. Mahindra Ssangyong Rexton measures 4755mm in length, 1900mm in width and 1840mm in height with a ground clearance of 252mm.

Interior

Where the exteriors of Mahindra Ssangyong Rexton are incredible and outstanding, the interiors are lavish and elegant. The small yet classy dashboard houses the central console with the touch screen infotainment system, the simple and outdated instrument panel and the high quality air condition vents. The dual color combination of beige and black gives it a rich and elegant look. Mahindra Ssangyong Rexton comes only in two transmission variants; manual (5-seater RX5) and automatic (7-seater RX7). Both the variants are run on a 2.7 liter 5 cylinder direct injected common rail diesel engine capable of producing a displacement of 2696cc. The manual variant can produce a maximum power of 162bhp at 4000rpm and a maximum torque of 340Nm at 1800-3250rpm whereas the automatic variant can generate a peak power of 184bhp at 4000rpm and a peak torque of 402Nm at 1800-3250rpm. The 5-speed transmission gearbox also has the capability of reducing the NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) levels which increase the performance and efficiency of this SUV.

Safety

Mahindra Ssangyong Rexton is a class apart when it comes to handling and safety. Handling features include double wishbone coil spring suspension system for the front, rigid axle 5 link coil spring suspension for the rear, ventilated disc brakes, EBD, ABS, traction control, electronic stability program, collision avoidance system and power assisted steering wheel. Volkswagen Vento

Volkswagen Vento has been exclusively designed by the German manufacturer to go in direct competition with the Indian market leader, the Honda City. As an entry level sedan car, the Volkswagen Vento had managed to prosper in the automobile market, right from the start. In 2010, the Volkswagen group has introduced their fourth hybrid car, the Volkswagen Vento, in their new factory in Pune. This new hybrid is available in both diesel and petrol versions. Vento is regarded as an extended version of the hatchback, Volkswagen Polo, which adds in minor details to differentiate it from the latter. The ex-showroom price for this car is 7.2-10.2 lakhs.

Exterior

The key feature that makes Volkswagen Vento a grand competitor with others in the market is the wider and well proportioned interiors and exteriors. Interior

Volkswagen Vento offers a sense of tranquility due to the sophisticated and mind-blowing interior designing, which is in close proximity to the exterior. Maruti Ertiga

The car which was code-named as Maruti R3, from Maruti Suzuki has made a grand entry in the automobile world, which made every car in all of the segments, to compete with them. The petrol variant is packed with the fuel efficient K14B engine with 1.4 liter VVT power train, which produces a displacement of 1373cc along with a peak power of 93.7bhp at 6000rpm and a peak torque of 130Nm at 4000rpm. The diesel variant is powered by a 1.3 liter multijet turbo diesel engine integrated with DDiS (Direct Diesel Inspection System). This engine produces a displacement of 1248cc generating a maximum power of 88.7bhp at 4000rpm and a maximum torque of 200Nm at 1750rpm. The engine features Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT) and Variable Valve Timing (VVT) to increase efficiency and performance.

Maruti Ertiga has a lot of standard and modern safety features like Anti-lock Braking System with EBD, engine immobilizer, high tensile roof and two airbags in the front, for both the driver and the co-driver. Chevrolet Sail UVA

General Motors has made their way successfully in the hatchback segment, with the introduction of the new hybrid variety, the Chevrolet Sail UVA. This sedan is an end product which resulted from the joint venture of GM-SAIC in China. This hatchback is available in both the petrol version and the diesel versions. About seven versions are present for this hatchback, with 2 engines and 1 transmission options. This model has been designed to go into competition with Ford Figo, Toyota Etios Liva and Maruti Swift. Exterior

Chevrolet Sail UVA has been designed exclusively after keen analyzing and matured innovations. The angular headlines, the split front grille, the bonnet and the front bumper with edgy lines and the aerodynamic figure makes the car exceptionally jaw dropping. The dual rounded fog lamps and the simple air dam embedded in it marks the individuality of the car. Interior

The brown and beige color of the Chevrolet Sail UVA dashboard gives an airy comfort and feeling to the interior of the cabin. The central console, as well as the surroundings of the of the side AC vents is made attentive with silver finishing. At first look, the steering is seemed to be out of position and they lack attractive colors as well. The dashboard seems to be rather bland with only plastic finishing. The buttons for horn are present on either side of the 3-spoke steering wheel. The instrument cluster includes an analogue speedometer, digital tachometer and a digital display with trip meter, odometer and fuel meter. Chevrolet Sail UVA comes in two variants; petrol and diesel. The 1.2 liter S-TEC petrol engine variant is capable of producing a maximum power of 84.8bhp and a maximum torque of 113Nm at 6000rpm. The diesel variant is powered by a 1.3 liter turbocharged SMARTECH engine which can produce a maximum power of 76.4bhp and a maximum torque of 205Nm at 4000rpm.

Safety

Chevrolet Sail UVA is stuffed with features to ensure complete safety of the passengers. Honda Urban SUV Concept

The all new Honda Urban SUV Concept made its world debut last week at the 2013 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) held in Detroit. This new SUV concept is a preview of the future small model that the Japanese auto giant is planning to launch at the end of this year in Japan and in US by 2014. According to John Mendel, executive vice president for sales in Honda America “No one has had greater success with small cars than Honda and this Urban SUV Concept will create new value in the growing small-SUV segment”.

Exterior

The Honda Urban SUV Concept is basically targeted for active lifestyle customers providing them with a fun to drive and fuel efficient small SUV equipped with an aspirational design, flexible packaging and next generation connectivity. From the front the car looks very much similar to the current Honda models especially the Honda CRV, but differs with the center grille that tapers towards the bottom and the angular LED headlamps which makes the car look gorgeous. The side profile is characterized by a crease line that starts from the front side door and extends upto the C-pillar and finally intersects the curved, descending upper edge of the side windows at the rear, giving the vehicle a strong and distinctive graphic signature look.

The rear of this concept SUV is marked with a series of three U shaped lines that creates a blend of convex-concave shapes, giving space for the license plate in between. Also the distinctive tail lamps which incorporate the twin horizontal LED elements are visually connected to the U shaped lines thus overall giving the car an overall dynamic look and stance.

Interior

The new Urban SUV is believed to have a center-tank layout which will help the car benefit from Honda’s Magic Seats technology. This technology will enable various seat configurations to fit any needs as and when required by the occupants. Also the configurable Magic Seat setup can give a wide range of passenger and cargo options that includes a fold-flat mode for maximum cargo capacity. Apart from all these this concept SUV will feature next-generation telematics & modern interior.

Engine & Performance

The Honda Urban SUV Concept will have three powertrain options; being the petrol, diesel and a hybrid. It is expected that the car will utilize the company’s Earth Dreams engine and the next generation transmission technology which is focused on both high driving performance and better fuel efficiency with reduced CO₂ emissions. We’ll have more details on this SUV once Honda makes them available.

Conclusion

Though the concept cars displayed in the Auto Shows looks fancy, these kinds of futuristic  designs may probably take couple of years to come. The pricing of the Honda Urban SUV Concept is reportedly positioned below the CR-V and the company plans to sell more than 1.5 million units annually of its three global “Compact Series models” which includes the Honda Fit, the Honda City and the all new compact SUV, by the end of year 2016.

Renault Scala

Following Pulse, they have launched another yet successful sedan, a massive hit from the French auto manufacturers, the Renault Scala. Although the name suggests it to be a new, completely modified sedan, in reality it is not so. The Renault Scala is found to be a reinstated model of Nissan Sunny. Research has revealed that Renault India had developed new hybrid cars based on the appropriate competitor cars. They have no building factors that could let one believe that the sedan is not copied. The recent variety from Renault, the Pulse was developed based on Nissan Micra and Duster, was developed based on Dacia Duster. The on road rate for this sedan ranges from Rs. 7.05-9.67 lakhs.

Exterior

Although Renault had developed Renault Scala based on Nissan Sunny, they had managed to make minor changes on the sedan, particularly on the exterior, to make them look fresh and new. However, they gave this sedan a brand new look with stylish clues from their master car, Renault Fluence. The bumper of the sedan is quite eye-catching with simple design and has a grille which is much more royal and enhanced than any of their earlier models. The rear end is found to be as royal and enhanced as that of the front view. The turn indicators of the sedan have ORVM feature and are electrically handled. The wheel arches are designed with premium alloys and they are body colored as well, which gives the sedan a stylish look. The overall length of the sedan is 4425mm, width of 1695mm and height of 1505mm. The Renault Scala has a ground clearance of 165mm.

The interior of Renault Scala is worth mentioning. It is designed so as to include all the stylish and safety features within. The air conditioning is equipped with automatic climate control feature to ensure proper cooling is given to all sides. The petrol variant is powered by 1498cc, 4cylinder and 8 valve XH2 engine which produces a maximum of 97.6bhp power and a maximum of 134Nm torque at 6000rpm. The diesel variant comes with 1461cc, 4 cylinder and 8 valve K9K engine which generates 84.8bhp peak power and 200Nm peak max torque at 3750rpm.

Safety

Renault Scala incorporates dual front airbags to ensure complete safety of the driver and the co-passenger. In addition to that, the sedan  has an ABS locking system, electronic brake system, Speed sensing auto door lock system, ABS+EBD with Emergency Brake Assist system, Adjustable front and rear  headrests, rear window defroster with timer, Engine immobilizer, smoked style headlights and the variable intermittent front wiper also ensures that complete safety is provided for the passengers. Nissan Sunny

The sedan, code named as L02B, from Nissan has found its way to rule the Indian market and make other competitors go envy upon it. It is none other than the massive successful version from Nissan, the Nissan Sunny. Based on the same platform from that of a Renault Scala, they have managed to develop this version. It was launched on September 20, 2011 with petrol engine alone. However, in 12^th December, 2011, the diesel version of the sedan has been also developed and introduced in the Indian market. Altogether, there are three variants of Nissan Sunny, one petrol and two diesel versions. This sedan was born in the Nissan-Renault plant in Chennai and was exported to other countries. The 5 speed, 1.5 L 4 cylinders and 16 valves powered engine has a decent price tag when comes on the road. The ex-showroom price of the whole versions ranges from Rs. 5.93-10 lakhs.

Exterior

The front grille of Nissan Sunny is highlighted by chrome outline and has muscular bumpers as well. Large meshes are present on the air dams, such that the horn and the radiator are quite clearly visible. The frontal view of the sedan gives a much royal look to it. Since the left side of the grille is blocked, the complete air flow is focused to the right, in order to optimize the air flow towards the air intake inside the hood. The Nissan Sunny has a typical coupe look which resembles that of a sloping roofline. The body color of this premium sedan is worth mentioning. They are rich and premium, and together with the large rear glasses, they provide a royal and airy look to the sedan. The paint used in the sedan is a special weight reduction paint that reduces the overall weight of the sedan by 0.7. Just as from the front, the rear look of the car also gives a premium look. The bumpers look more masculine and are bulgy. Although it lacks the rear fog lamps, they have reflectors that have clusters. The overall length of the sedan is 4425mm, width of 1695mm and height of 1505mm. The ground clearance of the sedan is 165mm.

Interior

From the interior, Nissan Sunny looks quite similar to a Nissan Micra. The dashboard design is similar to it as well and is made of plastic which gives a complete fit-and-finish look to the sedan. The door handle is rather chunky, just as that of the base version. The seats are made such that they hug you tightly from all sides and no sides are left unsupported. The beige colored seats give an ample and comfortable look to the sedan. The rounded dashboard gives ample leg space to the driver. On the central armrest in the front, cup holders are embedded within to support battles and magazines.  The audio system supports AUX, CD, and USB and has four speakers to ensure that complete comfort and relaxation is given to the passengers. The instrument cluster has two large dials with MID in the center. The sedan offers enough leg space to ensure that the passengers in the rear seat could sit comfortably. The boot space is 490litres.

  

Engine & Performance

Nissan Sunny was launched only in the petrol option first but then later, the diesel variant was introduced after seeing the demand for diesel cars in India. Both the variants are packed with five speed manual transmission gearbox. The petrol variant has a capacity to displace 1498cc with a 4 cylinder 16 valve engine producing a maximum power of 100bhp and a maximum torque of 134Nm at 6000rpm. The diesel variant is powered by a 4 cylinder 8 valve SOHC K9K engine which has the capacity to displace 1461cc thus producing peak power of 86bhp at 3750rpm and peak torque of 200Nm at 2000rpm.

Safety

Nissan Sunny is stuffed with both active and passive safety features to ensure complete safety of the passengers. The dual SRS airbags in the front, ABS system, EBD with brake assist, front disc brakes, halogen headlamps, seat belts, front fog lamps, engine immobilizer, front and side impacts and impact absorbing body, child lock system, keyless entry system, central locking system and, adjustable day and night rear view mirror features to ensure complete safety  of the passengers. For immediate braking of the sedan, the front disk brakes and rear drum brakes are perfect for this. Tata Indigo e-CS is the best option for all those who are out there, in pursuing for purchasing a sedan for not more than 5 lakhs. The Tata Indigo e-CS was launched in the Auto Expo 2008 by Tata Motors in New Delhi. Interior

The inside of the Tata Indigo e-CS is made more classy with an off white color, rather than the usual black gray shades, that is commonly  available in the market. Engine & Performance

Tata Indigo e-CS has three engine variants; one petrol and two diesel variants. The petrol variant is available with timing controlled Multi Point Fuel Injection (MPFI) system which gives a displacement of 1193cc producing power of 65bhp and torque of 100Nm at 2700 rpm. The diesel variants come in two options – CR4 and TDI. The 16 valve Common Rail CR4 BSIV engine has a displacement of 1396cc producing 70bhp of power at 4000rpm and 140Nm of torque at 1800-3100rpm. The TDI BSIII is a turbo charged engine integrated with an intercooler producing a power of 70bhp at 4500rpm and torque of 135Nm at 2500rpm.

Safety

Like any other new generation cars, the Tata Indigo e-CS also incorporates all the safety features to ensure the safety of the passengers. Central locking feature and anti-lock braking system are the key features that make the car most secured apart from others.
